Atish Was Offered a ₹16,089 EMI on a ₹10 Lakh Car. The Dealer Did Not Mention the ₹3.51 Lakh Interest.
Should You Take a 3, 5 or 7 Year Car Loan? The Interest Maths on ₹10 Lakh
Illustrative Case Study: Atish and the "Low EMI" Car Loan
A ₹10 lakh car loan at an assumed 9% costs about ₹1,44,790 in interest over 3 years, ₹2,45,501 over 5 years and ₹3,51,483 over 7 years. The 7 year EMI of ₹16,089 looks gentle, but it costs ₹2,06,692 more than the 3 year loan. Atish is a fictional example built to show the trap.

Illustrative case study. Atish is a fictional example created to explain the maths; he is not a DhanSutra client and this is not a real planning session. All figures are calculated from the stated assumptions. Not investment advice.
Stretching the same ₹10,00,000 loan from 3 years to 7 years lowers the EMI from ₹31,800 to ₹16,089, and raises the total interest from ₹1,44,790 to ₹3,51,483. That is ₹2,06,692 extra for the comfort of a smaller monthly number.
A longer loan also keeps you in debt for more years than the car keeps its value. The EMI is the dealer's favourite number. The total cost is yours.

🔵 THE EMI ANCHOR
Why the first monthly number you hear decides the whole deal
A dealer who opens with ₹16,089 a month has set the anchor. Every shorter option then feels expensive, even though it is the cheaper loan. The anchor works because an EMI is easy to compare with a salary, while total interest needs a calculator nobody opens in a showroom.

🟡 THE UNDERWATER WINDOW
The months when you owe more than the car is worth
A car loses value quickly, while a long loan repays slowly. For some months the loan balance is higher than the resale value, which means selling or an insurance total loss claim may not clear the debt. A longer tenure widens this window.

The Showroom Offer
Atish is a fictional 31 year old sales manager in Jaipur with a take home pay of ₹80,000 a month. He has chosen a car priced at about ₹10 lakh after a down payment and the finance executive has done the arithmetic for him.
"Sir, EMI sirf ₹16,089 aayegi. Aapki salary mein bilkul aaram se chalegi," says the executive, sliding across a printed sheet. Atish nods. ₹16,089 is about 20 percent of his take home pay and feels comfortable.
Before he signs, he asks one question: "Kitna total dena padega?" The sheet does not show it. So we calculate it together.

The 7 year loan costs ₹1,05,981 more than the 5 year loan and ₹2,06,692 more than the 3 year loan. Atish would be paying for the comfort of a ₹15,000 lower EMI with more than two lakh rupees.
The dealer sold Atish a monthly number. The bank was selling him seven years of interest. Only one of those figures was printed on the sheet.
The Part the Sheet Never Shows: Owing More Than the Car Is Worth
Cars lose value fast. For the illustration, assume the car loses 20 percent in the first year and 15 percent a year after that. This is an assumption, not a valuation. Here is the loan balance against that assumed value:

In this illustration, the 5 year loan is above the car value for about the first year. The 7 year loan stays above it for more than four years. During that window, a theft, an accident or a sudden need to sell could leave Atish paying off a car he no longer has.
What a Smarter Version of This Purchase Looks Like
The EMI of ₹16,089 was never the real signal. It was a warning that the car may be priced above what Atish can comfortably pay. A common rule of thumb many planners use is to keep all vehicle EMIs within roughly 10 to 15 percent of take home pay. For Atish that is ₹8,000 to ₹12,000 a month, which is below even the 7 year EMI.
So the useful options are a larger down payment or a cheaper car. For example, borrowing ₹7,00,000 instead of ₹10,00,000 over 5 years gives an EMI of ₹14,531 and total interest of ₹1,71,851, which is about ₹73,650 less interest than the ₹10 lakh loan over the same 5 years. Borrowing less is the only lever that cuts the interest and the Underwater Window at once.
If You're in Atish's Situation Today
1
Decide the car's total budget before you walk into the showroom. Fix the maximum price and down payment first, then see what loan remains. The EMI should come out of your budget, not define it.
2
Ask for the total interest and total repayment in writing. If the sheet shows only the EMI, ask for the full repayment schedule.
3
Compare 3, 5 and 7 years side by side. Pick the shortest tenure whose EMI you can pay without touching your emergency fund or SIP.If only the 7 year EMI feels affordable, the car is probably too expensive.
4
Check for prepayment charges and processing fees. A longer loan is less costly if you can prepay it freely, but terms differ. Read the foreclosure clause before signing.
5
Keep the emergency fund and insurance separate. Do not use up your emergency fund on the down payment. A loan EMI is a fixed commitment even in a month without income.
In this illustration, a ₹10 lakh car loan at 9% costs ₹1,44,790 in interest over 3 years and ₹3,51,483 over 7 years, a difference of ₹2,06,692. A lower EMI is not a lower cost.
Atish's Illustrative Decision
At the showroom: Atish asks for the total repayment on all three tenures instead of signing the 7 year sheet.
The next day: He lowers the car budget, raises the down payment and takes a ₹7,00,000 loan over 5 years instead.
The result in this example: an EMI of ₹14,531, about 18 percent of his take home pay, with total interest of ₹1,71,851 against ₹3,51,483 on the original offer.
MY HONEST TAKE
What stays with me from this example is how little the dealer needed to say. The EMI was the whole pitch, and it sounded reasonable. Most people compare it with their salary, not with the total they will pay.
If you remember one thing, make it this: the right tenure is the shortest one you can pay without strain. If only the longest loan feels comfortable, take it as a sign the price is too high, not as a reason to stretch.

Frequently Asked Questions
Usually the shortest tenure whose EMI you can pay comfortably without touching your emergency fund. On a ₹10 lakh loan at an assumed 9%, total interest is about ₹1.45 lakh over 3 years, ₹2.46 lakh over 5 years and ₹3.51 lakh over 7 years, so each extra year adds a lot of cost.
At an assumed 9% a year on a reducing balance, about ₹1,44,790 over 3 years, ₹2,45,501 over 5 years and ₹3,51,483 over 7 years. Your actual rate may be higher or lower, so check your own offer and run the figures again.
A low EMI usually means a longer tenure, which means more interest in total. In this example, lowering the EMI from ₹31,800 to ₹16,089 by choosing 7 years instead of 3 adds ₹2,06,692 in interest.
The EMI Anchor is the effect of hearing a low monthly number first, which makes every shorter and cheaper option feel expensive. It works because EMI is easy to compare with salary, while total cost needs a calculator. (Term coined by Abhyudaya Vikram Singh, DhanSutra.co.in)
The Underwater Window is the period when your loan balance is higher than the car's resale value. A longer loan widens it. In the illustration here, a 5 year loan is above the assumed car value for about a year, while a 7 year loan stays above it for more than four years. (Term coined by Abhyudaya Vikram Singh, DhanSutra.co.in)
There is no single rule. Many planners suggest keeping all vehicle EMIs within roughly 10 to 15 percent of take home pay, and fixed loan EMIs overall within a limit that leaves room for savings and emergencies. Treat this as a rule of thumb, not a guarantee.
Yes. A bigger down payment reduces the loan, the EMI, the total interest and the Underwater Window together. In this example, borrowing ₹7 lakh instead of ₹10 lakh over 5 years cuts the EMI from ₹20,758 to ₹14,531.
Often yes, but terms vary. Some lenders charge a prepayment or foreclosure fee. Read the clause before signing, and compare the interest saved against any fee before you prepay.
It is an illustrative assumption. Rates change over time and differ by lender, credit profile, car type and loan amount. Use your actual offered rate in any calculation.
It depends on the price, your income and your goals. A car is a depreciating asset, so many planners prefer a large down payment and a short loan. If the car only fits your budget at the longest tenure, it may be worth reconsidering the price.
